The movie is based on real-life events and is available on Netflix: A national magazine is putting together a special issue on well-known heroes and Lloyd Vogel, an award-winning investigative journalist, is assigned Mister Rogers (Tom Hanks) – a popular TV program host. This is hardly the sort of assignment Lloyd is used to receiving, but his tendency to dig beneath the surface and uncover things that subjects would prefer to keep hidden … means that the nature of the project is bound to change. But what he assumes will be a simple puff piece, becomes more complex. As Lloyd’s personal life starts to go off the rails, the presence and message of Fred Rogers becomes both a torment and a challenge.
The film was nominated for numerous awards – including Best Supporting actor to Tom Hanks in the 2020 Oscars.
We are delighted to have Jutka Freiman joining us on zoom, giving us her perspective on the relationships portrayed in the film and leading the discussion. Jutka is a member of Woollahra Temple Emanuel and is a qualified psychotherapist who works with individuals, couples and groups. You are invited to watch this film in your own time on Netflix, and then to join us on Sunday 29th May at 5:30 pm to observe the discussion, and to address any comments or questions that you may have to Jutka.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our synagogue stands, the land of the Gamaragal people. Many of us and our forebears have come from other lands and found our spirit of kinship with Indigenous Australians whose connection with this land preceded ours, and we recognise that connection as sacred and enduring. May we walk together toward a future of justice and healing.
