High Holy Days Together@Home Frequently Asked Questions

HOW WILL WE CELEBRATE THE HIGH HOLY DAYS THIS YEAR?

In this extraordinary year, we aspire for NSTE’s High Holy Day services to be:

  • Inclusive - everyone must be able to attend,
  • Engaging - everyone must be able to feel involved with opportunities to participate, and
  • Uplifting - we see music and song as central to this.

Accordingly, we feel that the best way for us to offer meaningful services for these High Holy Days, 5781, is through an interactive, online High Holy Days Together@Home series of services.

WHY AREN’T SERVICES TO BE HELD IN THE NSTE SANCTUARY?

Given the government’s social distancing rules requiring four square metres for each person in any public space, it is not possible to offer services in the sanctuary that would be accessible to all members.

WHY NOT HAVE IN PERSON SERVICES AND JUST LIMIT THE NUMBERS?

The three principles on which this decision was made were that our High Holy Day services must be Inclusive, Engaging and Uplifting.  To limit the number of people that could attend does not meet our aim to be as inclusive as possible.

Our theme for this High Holy Days season is b’yachad (togetherness).   In the spirit of togetherness, we will all share the same experience, so that nobody feels left out.  Our largest space can only fit a small fraction of the people who usually attend and it is difficult to find a fair way of allocating seats. Furthermore, due to Covid-19 regulations regarding group singing, the in-person service cannot include the chanting and music that we traditionally include. Streaming such a service is likely to result in an aesthetically less than satisfactory experience for both groups.

COULD NSTE HOLD EXTRA SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE DAY?

Unfortunately no - We have only limited large space and two Rabbis. Holding extra services poses an unacceptable burden and increased risk on our Rabbis, service leaders and volunteers.  It would also require cleaning to be undertaken between the services and add to the administrative complexity of organising the services.

CAN I COME TO NSTE TO WATCH IT LIVE?

Unfortunately this is not possible - but neither is it desirable.  Aside from the difficult logistics and lack of inclusivity in deciding who can and cannot attend, this would also create significant logistical issues with respect to sanitising the space between services (requiring thorough cleaning overnight between evening and morning services).

WHICH MACHZOR (HIGH HOLY DAY PRAYER BOOK) WILL BE USED?

We will be using the new Mishkan T’shuvah machzor developed especially for Progressive communities in our region.  Please refer to the High Holy Days Together@Home webpage for how to get free online access or obtain a hard copy of the books.

DO I NEED A MACHZOR TO TAKE PART IN A SERVICE?

No but using one may enhance your experience.

SOUNDS GREAT- HOW CAN I ATTEND NSTE HIGH HOLY DAYS TOGETHER@HOME?

For security reasons, all attendees must register in advance.  If you haven’t registered yet then please visit HERE.

DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF NSTE TO ATTEND?

Registration is open to all. You do not need to be a member of NSTE.  Non members may register HERE.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR HIGH HOLY DAYS TOGETHER@HOME?

Please see the registration buttons on the High Holy Days Together@Home webpage for how to register. All attendees must register in advance. You will need to create an NSTE login using your email address and a password. Please register as soon as possible and keep a record of your email and password. We encourage you to also reach out to any family or friends who might need assistance.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I REGISTER?

Around one week before Rosh Hashanah (i.e. around 10 September), you will receive an email with your link to access the services. For security reasons, please do not share the link. As soon as you receive the link, you will be able to test it and we encourage everyone to do so.

WHAT IF I REGISTER BUT AFTERWARDS MISPLACE MY LINK? CAN I STILL ACCESS THE SERVICES?

Yes - as long as you have set up your email and password, you will be able to log in through the NSTE website.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A COMPUTER?  CAN I PARTICIPATE USING MY PHONE OR TABLET (IPAD)?

You will be able to log in from a computer, a tablet (e.g. iPad), or a smartphone.

If you will be participating in any aspect of the services (eg. for a call up), we would prefer that you use a device with a camera so you can be visible. Of course, this will not be mandatory.

WHAT IF I NEED HELP?

If you need help in the days leading up to the High Holy Days, please contact info@nste.org.au. We will also have a support line open during services should you have any difficulties.
