Who are we?
Board of Directors 2008-2009
This team of volunteers represents the members of the congregation.
It’s the Board’s role is to work together to provide strong leadership and
clear direction for North Shore Temple Emanuel. Directors are elected at
the Annual General Meeting or can be co-opted during the year.
Each Board member has a portfolio, when assigned, which represents the
Synagogue Night Out (SNO) area at which they represent the Board and about
which they report back to the Board. Board members plan and coordinate the
undertaking of many of our activities with the help of other committees
involving our members. The current Board members are:
President: Stephen Freeman
Stephen is a City commercial solicitor and has two sons, Alex and Antony.
Besides being a Director of NSTE for a number of years, he is a UIA
executive member and is particularly interested in Diaspora/Israel
dialogue and outreach programs to provide religious and community
services for Jews everywhere.
Immediate Past President: Ralph Pliner
Ralph’s and his wife Sybil have two children, Daniel and Rachael. The
family have been members of the Temple for sixteen years. A lawyer
by profession, recently turned company director, Ralph hopes to continue
to provide further impetus to the direction of the Temple to increase
community involvement; intensify the sense of community; and to attract as
many young people to the Temple as possible.
Treasurer: Dennis Levy
Dennis and Susan, together with their now-married children Mark and
Jacqueline
joined NSTE in 1978 and Dennis has been on the Board since 2002. He,
together with Immediate Past President Dr Frank Wolf works closely with
the Chief Executive Officer to attend to NSTE’s fiscal matters. Dennis
also enjoys cooking and has been responsible for some of the delicious
food enjoyed at Shabbat dinners, Chevrah Torah lunchesand meals for
members in need. He is also the instigator of the Yad b’Yad program.
Perry Cohn
Perry, an engineer by profession, has been associated with NSTE since
attending a Times and Seasons course in 1991. Perry is married to Lindy
and has two sons Reuben (15) and Zachery (12). Previously he served on the
Parents Committee of the Hebrew Schol and on the Board of the NSTE Martin
and Emma Hanes Pre School which both his sons attended.
Perry has been a chorister at NSTE for many years and his second son, Zac,
will celebrate his bar mitzvah this year.
Susan Kadar
Susan, a director of Lloyd-Jones Meakin Group, is a married to Peter and
has two adult daughters, Judith and Esther. They joined NSTE in 1994. New to the Board in
2006, her experience as a management consultant has already been of help
to the incoming board.
Kolya Miller
Kolya and his wife Symone have three young children, Talia, Ezra and Adena and live in
Lane Cove. Our youngest board member, aged 32, Kolya is also the president
of the Martin and Emma Hannes Pre-school. He recently participated in the
Union of Progressive Judaism Leadership Institute course. Kolya is
particularly interested in increasing the membership of young families and
encouraging their involvement in the Temple community
Stephen Scholem
Stephen was born in South Africa and came to Australia in 1961 where he
married Deborah in 1983. They have three daughters Marianne, Johanna
and Amalia. Stephen
is a medical practitioner in North Ryde. The family joined NSTE in 1991
and Stephen has been a Board member since 2003. He is a regular shul
attender on Shabbat, festivals and other activities.
Ron Sinclair
Ron has been a member of NSTE for thirty seven years and Board member for
some twenty years in many portfolios, including three years as vice
President and three years as President. Ron has been and still is involved
in many community activities both Jewish and non Jewish, including fund
raising for them.
Peter Stein
Peter was born in Grenfell NSW and has been a medical practitioner
for 22 years. Peter is the father of two children. He has been attending
NSTE since 2004 and completed Melton course through Shalom college in
2004. Peter completed his conversion in 2006 and immediately joined the
congregation. He regularly attends shule and sings in the choir.
