High Holidays
Selichot
Our Selichot service is preceded by a thought-provoking activity, entertainment or study program session and climaxes with the service and sounding of the Shofar. At this time, the Torah mantles and parochet (Torah curtain) are changed to white. The North Shore Temple Emanuel choir provide music that is appropriate to the season.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
NSTE offers to our members and guests exceptionally gracious, dignified and meaningful services for each of the High Holy Days. The music presented is superb, the sermons thoughtful and the environment conducive to meaningful reflection. The Shofar is sounded on Rosh Hashanah and a beautiful Havdalah service ends the Yom Kippur service. Seats are not assigned for the High Holy Days, but in these difficult times of increased security, tickets are essential for entry. Overseas or interstate visitors are welcome and tickets can be arranged for them on a casual basis. Machzorim are not available to borrow on the High Holy Days, but can be purchased at any other time.
Call the Temple office for details regarding service times, when tickets are sent, and what arrangements are in place for children/family involvement.
Succot
For Succot, we hold classes, share meals under our Sukkah and hold festival services in a warm festive atmosphere. Our members are encouraged, and given the help necessary, to build their own Sukkah. B’nei Emunah is observed, signifying a milestone in the Jewish education of our year 9 students. A seasonal highlight is the Rabbi’s Afternoon tea, to which all congregants are invited.
Simchat Torah/Shemini Atzeret
A time of rejoicing, during Simchat Torah, our members and our guests, men and women alike, dance with the Torah, hear the final and beginning sections read aloud while members of the congregation are honoured for their contributions to the religious and communal life of the congregation.
