Bar and Bat mitzvah: In preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah, students build a foundation of understanding in Jewish history, values, religious observance and liturgical Hebrew. We offer the same preparation and opportunities, and hold the same expectations, for both boys and girls. Preparation for Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies is intellectually challenging and spiritually rewarding. Students must be enrolled in our program from Year 5 or an alternative arrangement must be made with the Rabbi.

It is a requirement that the families of prospective B’nei Mitzvah students must be members of the congregation for three years prior to their simcha.

Kesher Lanoar

Kesher Lanoar is a program for all Jewish high school students. It offers a variety of ways to stay involved with Jewish friends, Jewish culture and Jewish learning. (Flier)

Kesher Lanoar is proud to be in its 3rd year of operation and looking forward to another year of exciting programs and meaningful ways to reach out to Jewish teenagers.

The 2008 program will include 5 pathways to choose from.
This new program has been designed with input from the students and we are sure it will offer a variety of ways to stay involved with Jewish friends, Jewish culture and Jewish learning.

  • B’nei Emunah – 4 Mondays every school term with Rabbi Robuck, continued formal education with captivating topics for teens who love a challenge.

  • Creative Arts and Jewish Culture – 4 Thursdays every school term with Janet Granek. A medley of creative arts are used to teach Jewish values and practices

  • Monthly Social Events – joining with Netzer, students will have the opportunity to attend Dance parties, a harbor excursion, a pre-Pesach Pizza Party and game show night, Yom Haatzmaut celebrations, Shabbat retreats, social justice projects such as Relay for Life, a Drug and Alcohol forum with Point Zero and other fun excursions and celebrations of the Chaggim.

  • Interfaith Encounters Year 10 & 11 program – once a month students will have the opportunity to visit places of worship around Sydney, learning about other religions and their own Jewish identities. This program will culminate with participation in the Youth Encounters Interfaith School program, which Kesher Lanoar has participated in for two years running.

  • Synagogue Leadership, Mentoring & Netzer Hadracha: students in years 9-12 are encouraged to help coordinate special youth Shabbat services, youth Chaggim activities, and mentor primary school aged students participating in the Family Service. Year 10 students are encouraged to join Netzer for their excellent Hadracha (leadership training) program.

Launch 2008:

Independent projects/study in your own time Years 8-12. If you are time restricted and can not commit to any of the previous programs this is the pathway for you. We will help you develop your own project or learning program. Examples of this could be:
- shooting and editing a video documentary of "being Jewish in Sydney"
- writing creative pieces to be published in our monthly newsletter
- studying selections of fascinating rabbinic texts under the guidance of Rabbi Gary
- you create your own!
