Pocket Prayers
These Pocket Prayers, available from the foyer, were composed by congregational psalmist, Donna Sife to offer comfort, hope and inspiration for people to use in their everyday lives and who wish to elevate their experience so it becomes sacred in itself and is seen as part of the Divine Drama that is our lives. There are prayers for becoming a member of a community; on receiving a diagnosis; on losing a loved one; for the end of a relationship; birth of a child; adoption of a child; child beginning or changing school; miscarriage; for parents with children leaving home or travelling abroad; before surgery; after surgery; upon losing a job; change of seasons; on taking an examination; on moving house; for depression; for forgiveness; for endings and beginnings; for wisdom and clarity; for courage. These conveniently sized prayers can be carried around in a pocket, given when visiting with a friend or family member in hospital, placed on the refrigerator door or on a bedside table. Placing them in the foyer for our members to pick up whenever they require shows that we care! Design and photography by Alan Taylor.

Etz Chayim Chumash is a treasure trove and an educational tool of the highest order, including the latest scholarship in a wide variety of fields, from anthropology to biblical history. Etz Chayim’s handsome binding makes it an obvious gift for B’nei mitzvah, and an essential book for every home library.

Notes from the Rabbi’s Desk by Rabbi Robuck
Published in 2003, it contains carefully edited, newly revised, sermons, essays, observations and opinion pieces that reflect Rabbi’s humorous, insightful and personal approach to topics of lasting importance to Jewish life.
Chapters in Notes include: The Synagogue and the Jewish World, Perceptions of Israel, Sacred Seasons, Religion, Politics and Culture, the Holocaust and its Stubborn Remnants and Making our Lives Count. This is a book you will want to pick up time and again for inspiration and uplift. It is both a record of Rabbi Robuck’s rabbinate between 1992 and 2003, and an up-close look at the intellectual and spiritual interests of the North Shore Temple’s rabbi.

A Bird’s Eye View of Jewish Knowledge
by Rabbi Richard Lampert, Rabbi Emeritus

This book was written to provide an elementary understanding of Jewish knowledge. Initially intended for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students it was later expanded for the Introduction to Judaism Course. The booklet provides a basic outline of the religious literature of Judaism and a guide to Jewish philosophy. It also provides an introduction to the Jewish calendar and festivals. Also covered is the Jewish life-cycle from Brit through B’mitzvah, to marriage, divorce, death and mourning customs.

A Bird’s Eye Look at Jewish History
by Rabbi Richard Lampert, Rabbi Emeritus

This little book outlines (in not too much detail) the first 4000 years of Jewish history from the story of Abraham, the first Hebrew, and salient points of Jewish history until virtually the present day. The booklet also contains some of Rabbi Lampert’s inimitable gimmicks to help the reader memorise certain essential facts and features the famous ‘Franklin’ Square – developed by Rabbi Stephen Franklin and updated by Rabbi Lampert which assists the reader/student to fit the highlights of Jewish history into a square of which each side represents 1000 years.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Samei’ach Too

This educational book and CD set includes home services around the family table for Shabbat and other holy days.

Siddur Chaverim Kol Israel is the product of the progressive Chavorah of Boston and has been introduced for use on Friday nights here in Australia exclusively at NSTE. A thoroughly accessible siddur, it provides worshippers with a complete hebrew text, innovative prayers and modern commentaries, a literal translation plus, and most importantly, a linear transliteration which enables members without reading ability to fill more part of the service.

A Chanukah Cantata CD

A composition based on the festival of Chanukah, the Cantata is dedicated to the quest for peace in Jerusalem and in the world. In December 2000 it was performed at the White House as part of the holiday concert series and has been aired on radio stations across five continents. There have been at least 20 performances of the Cantata or selections from it since its premiere in December 1999.

A Hallel for Our Times - Psalms 113 - 118 CD

A contemporary oratorio by American composer Shelley Olson, expressing hope for humanity. The uplifting Psalms 113-118 are collectively known as The Hallel. They form part of the liturgy for ancient Jewish festivals, and more recent holidays such as Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day).
The CD features acclaimed harpist Marshall McGuire, members of the Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Australian and American vocal soloists and the community choirs of the Temple Emanuel and North Shore Temple Emanuel. The work was toured in the USA in 2004 by Bel Canto, a professional choral group
This complete, gender-neutral setting of the Hallel reflects universality through the use of diverse musical genres, from plainchant to classical artsong to jazz. It includes a dramatic narration written by Donna Jacobs Sife and Judy Campbell, based on aspects of the life of King David. At the heart of the work are twelve Psalm settings symbolising the original twelve tribes of Israel, unified by David.

Both of the CDs mentioned above were collaborations between Judy Campbell (as Music Director) and USA Jewish composer Shelley Olson. Both CDs feature the NSTE Choir.

A selection of general books on Judaism are also available, all at reasonable prices.
